Jennifer Orthwein Joins MeTooBehindBars Panel

Jennifer Orthwein, Founding Partner, will be contributing on a panel of esteemed activists to speak on the gender-based and sexual violence experienced by incarcerated individuals, moderated by Colby Lenz of CCWP and Survived & Punished. The panel on Saturday is a part of a larger 2 day event, Healing Justice: Ending Mass Incarceration Conference, presented by the Racial Justice Action Group.

Daniel Galindo Joins UC Hastings’ Day at Law School Panel

Attorney Daniel Galindo will be participating on a panel during the Day at Law School, an event at UC Hastings that provides opportunities for minorities and underrepresented youth to learn about the legal practice. The panel is hosted on behalf of UC Hastings La Raza Law School Association.

Jennifer Orthwein Speaking At the MeTooBehindBars Rally

Founding Partner, Jennifer Orthwein, will be in Sacramento outside of the California Corrections Department to support the MeTooBehindBars campaign. The rally raises awareness for the increased discrimination and sexual danger that women and queer individuals, particularly transgender and gender nonconforming people, face within the prison system at the hands of correction officers that perpetrate the gender-based violence.

DANIEL H. GALINDO’S PRO BONO CLIENT awarded $110,878.00 for wage & hour violations

The California Labor Commissioner issued an award of $110,878 to J.R.* after his employer, a Berkeley landlord, failed to pay him minimum and overtime wages and failed to provide rest breaks for nearly three years. Associate Daniel H. Galindo represented J.R. pro bono at his hearing at the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement of the California Department of Industrial Relations. Read more…

Jennifer Orthwein Lobbying in Sacramento on Behalf of Trans Prisoners with the Conference of California Bar Associations

Founding Partner Jen Orthwein will be in Sacramento on behalf of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF) and the Conference of California Bar Associations (CCBA) lobbying for SB-132, which will require CDCR to treat incarcerated trans folks with dignity and respect by requiring that staff use correct pronouns and house trans people based on their gender identity and/or their perception of health and safety.

Free legal clinic hosted by BALIF and the SF LGBT Center. This legal clinic is intended for community members needing pro bono legal advice, options, and an understanding of laws related to one of the following areas of law: Family Law, Immigration Law, Employment Law, Healthcare Law, Will & Trust, and Name/Gender Change (legal documents). We are providing help filling out name and gender marker legal changes and information on how to qualify for a fee waiver.

Jennifer Orthwein on LEGAL AID ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA’s “Reentry Legal Services: Representing Former Prisoners in SSI Advocacy” panel

Jennifer Orthwein will be a panelist on this informative webinar, hosted by the Legal Aid Association of California.  The event will focus the mental health-related requirements for disability benefits eligibility, with particular applicability to certain vulnerable populations: prisoners who have been adversely impacted by solitary confinement and transgender prisoners who have been traumatized by their prison experience. The panelists will address special issues that may arise in working with these clients. The program will also describe how legal services providers can go into correctional facilities to prepare pre-release Social Security applications.
